I hope ya’ll  are doing well. I was inspired to write a little about flow and FMA ( Escrima / Kali. ) A and I were talking about flow and learning to use the energy created by the stick, punch, machete or what ever you are using.

A and I are both happy to take breaks when we rain together. My shoulder/ collar bone can be down right sore at times. Because of that I enjoy flow drills. They give me the chance to slowly add hard power when it feels good, and not all the time. You know sneaky old fart stuff, I am a grandpa after all.😉 When I was in California to train with GM Rene, he talked a little about using the sneaky stuff and saving the power for the just the right moment. My old karate instructor told me that I would reach a time when I would have to do this as well. Long live experience! They both were right!

A. was talking about the FMA’er who he trained with in the Philippines, when he was there last time.  They relied more on the flow / energy of the stick once it was started. Every time I saw GM Latosa he did the same. He would use power, that comes from what I call power mechanism, and the flow of the weapon, as tools to put him where he wanted to be in a confrontation. Once you understand short power it is all about flow and timing. I think this is one of the reasons that he has always been able to generate the power at a given time for so long. The power mechanism, lets say hip rotation for conversation sake, is in some ways a reaction to the energy generated by the movement of the energy. ( Remember there are more power mechanisms.) In other cases, you will see the power mechanism being the reason for the energy in the weapon.

In short it goes both ways! I have posted a short video in the group. Some people have asked what I do when I free form and focus on flow. Well check out the LCE group and see for yourself. The flow training I do after/ before strength training is helping me to time the power / control mechanism, so I can take the stress off my collar bone joint.In a way, I am starting over with the first grade and learning to time the drop with my strikes.

So you might be asking yourself about the blog title and the cons of flow training. Only focusing on flow training is kinda like a pit trap in the day. There is a problem, what happens during the night? During the day, we feel safe because we can see the hole in the ground, BUT during the night, in the dark, it becomes dangerous. If you are not sure where it is you will have a nasty fall while looking for a place to empty your bladder. Having flow without the ability to to add power at different times in the strike, not having well developed power / control mechanisms, leads to a swinging stick or kick that can pull you off target. You know where the man is at all times in a confrontation. The pit trap in the dark can also be compared to only having the flow tool and having to react with power in an emergency situation. What happens when we need power to control power? …. Or balance to control focus and speed. What happens when we need to suddenly use speed with flow and focus if we have never done it?

You see where I am going. We need to be good at what we do. This could be power, flow, speed, reading an attacker, or what ever. BUT we also need to have some skills in the other end of the ball park as well. Case in point, when I started to do very slow movement to analyze them my explosive power increased as I stepped on the gas pedal again.

Any Hoo! If you watch the video, I am free forming. That is a type of visualizing while doing attacks and counters to the attacks you see coming at you. Be warned. It takes a lot of practice to do it in the beginning. It’s like visualizing a gymnastics routine on the run instead of standing still. It is a skill learned except for the visually intelligent people out there. I think in pictures, it’s easy for me. Free forming is also easier when you have more tools to use.You can focus on a specific footwork example or strike pattern. There are so many things that we can focus on, it becomes an art in it’s self.

  • Long, midrange and short strikes
  • Espada Y daga
  • Preempting, drawing the attacker in
  • And much more.
