DK FMA update, FMA Informative newsletter and more for Latosa Concepts folk.

I hope ya’ll are doing well. The weather is warmer and we are training LC Escrima outdoors, when the rains is not falling and other things work out. We have to keep our traditions going.

You have heard of making something good out of something bad. Well I’m doing it today. The old fart is feeling his age and the manual work he has. My back is keeping me at home. Some of the subjects of the post have a direct connection to this fact as well as the chance/time I have to post here now.

Before we get to the FMA Informative subject,…Remember to check out the DK FMA club page for the summer training plan. I will have 3 wks with my family for the first time inDansk FMA go selvforsvars gruppen several years. I’ll be around, just not at the club. This means there will be two wks of total vacation for the club. Many clubs (“Foreninger” in Danish ) here in Denmark shut down for 1-2 month during the selvforsvar træning på stranden, DK FMAsummer. We will be doing a mini version of that this year. AKA …2 wks. You can see more about the training plan for the summer here. You will also see that there is a period in which there is only outdoor training, we will not be using the Grøndals Center location during this time.

There are a few guys that have been away from training because of work, exams and the like. Have you dues with you when you start again men!

Remember that we have a “uniform”  of types when the train. The club t-shirt and dark shorts.

2 stick vs 1 stick, high-high-low drill

2 stick vs 1 stick, high-high-low drill

If you are a total beginner who is in a trial period. A white t-shirt is ok. I try to be tolerant but I only want to say this a few times men.

Now let’s get back to the FMA Informative subject. The reason I am home from work today is a nerve in my back. If you stop and think about some of the things we talk about at training, this is a subject that should be well known. We perform attacks/ counter attacks that damage the body and/or set up damaging attacks/counter attacks. We talk about lower/floating ribs that are easy target, nerves in the neck, muscle attachments and much more. The FMA Informative Newsletter this month has information about the same subjects. Because many of the Latosa concepts Denmark Outdoor training 2016men training with the club are still learning about bashing with a stick and other attacks, the cutting aspects have not been talked much about. Here is your chance men. There is info about this subject. There is always more we can talk about regarding attack targets and protecting ourselves.

To see the FMA Informative Newsletter click here. You will also see that our club is listed here with many other clubs if you are looking for a club in your area. Many styles are listed and the newsletter reflects the many FMA styles that are Udendørs fma træning DK FMAtrained. That’s the great thing about FMA. You will find clubs that are no-none-sense hard-hitting systems and you will find styles that have their own focus. Where we start teaching people with sticks, palm stick and unarmed and progress to cutting weapons, other styles might focus on other weapon combo’s or combinations (sinawali). In short check it out. I know one of our members will be moving home ( to another country) in a few month. The listing of clubs could help him.

FMA Informative pictureYou will also see pictures from some of the many seminars and workshops that have happened lately. Check it out and support our efforts to spread the word about FMA.

Glenn Beck interview of Tim Larkin, YouTube video. Latosa Concepts Terminology

I hope ya’ll are doing well. This will be a short quick one on my part. The video below is an interview that tells a lot about how we think. Please note there is a difference in martial arts, self-defense training and combative training. It’s one of those pink elephants in the room that many people will not talk about. Tim Larkin gets into this fact in their talk. Enjoy!

Summer outdoor training has started make sure we have your phone number so you can be on the text message list for training.

There is a large grassy area beside the fort. That’s where we meet.

I just got back from the beach where my wife and I enjoyed a coffee and a blanket on the ground. If the weather is as good as predicted I might have my lunch with me.

See you there men.

Terminology for Latosa Concepts and DK FMA and Self-defense. January 31 2016.

Terminology for Latosa Concepts and DK FMA and Self-defense. January 31 2016.

Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 4I hope ya’ll are doing well. I thought it was time to touch base with a few idea’s for the new members and a reminder for the other members.

Before I go too far, a tip og the hat to MA in Jutland. His group is doing well and growing. I am also working on some more sticks this bunch should be heavier.

The new men are experiencing the fact that we are a hitting system when we lookout the first few grades. The 1st grade is all about balance and learning to control our bodies. The men hear a lot about the pushing back leg, dropping power, the power leg and high starting positions.

As part of the striking theme, we are following right now, there is pad work, tire work and hitting sit-ups. Hitting sit-ups help with pulling the stick / hands back too far. They are one of the many drills we learned from GM Rene Latosa. They also help to coordinate the strikes with one of the power mechanisms that we use … the stomach and lats.

The men are also doing a hitting warm up on the tires to help work on the timing of the feet and the contact point (we are talking about time here!) many people will step in too far to use the strike or weapon they intended simply because they can’t control the happy feet. 😉

Foot work is great but unneeded footwork and /or at the wrong time will give you a head ache and/or take the power and balance out of your strike. The same goes for unneeded offline movement when we have the upper hand. AKA we are a head because of position and other factors.

pr 24 vs knifeI’m looking forward to seeing the new men go through the development that the rest of the group has gone through.  I don’t want to get into to much of it, but we can use an idea and the new men can think about it. Lets say the foot moves at a given speed (X) and the arm moves at another (Y) speed.  Now lets say the student steps a given distance when striking  (Z). If the math nerds haven’t figured it out yet we can can adjust one factor ( x, y, or z) and affect the strike.  Making people aware of this relationship is an ongoing learning curve. The new men are starting with it during the preparation for the 1st grade test. It’s down right amazing what we can do when we adjust these three factors or add some more factors to the equation.

Niklas is working on controlling these same factors, just with two sticks now. To a certain degree he is repeating the second grade just with 2 sticks.

And for the beginners, Some governing ideas / concepts we use are these gifts of awareness from GM Latosa.

  • Balance
  • Speed timing and distance
  • Focus
  • Power
  • Transition

They all are factors we use and more. You will continue to hear about them during the classes.

For non members, we train on Mondays and Wednesdays at 16:45- 18:15 at Grøndals Multicenter in Copenhagen. When we have some better weather we can start talking about beach training, wk-end training and more again. Make sure you email so we can plan a trial session for you. That’s on Monday from now on! Having people pop in almost every day is keeping me from the actual members.

That’s it for now, Have a great evening and have your water bottles at training tomorrow.

Latosa Concepts and DK FMA Terminology January 2016

Latosa Concepts and DK FMA Terminology January 2016, Monday Trial Training Day

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundTo start with I hope ya’ll are doing well. The subject for todays terminology post is bowing at the beginning and end of class. We’ll see where the post goes and if I throw a few other subjects in at the same time. One subject is Monday trial training day.

Why do we bow and where does it come from? To start with the last point first… we bow the way we do because GM Latosa said we should do it like that. I was told the story goes back to a tournament in with he showed the fighter how to bow. In short, it is a #2 strike in box form. Other FMA systems have their own way of doing it as well.

Now, lets get to the WHY. We bow to show respect for each other. I write EACH OTHER, because I have respect for students and I expect them to show the same respect in return. That should be expanded to the respect that all students should show to each other.

Latosa Concepts from GM Rene LatosaI don’t say; “bow to me” like some instructors do. That is my decision, just as the fact that, we all have the same t-shirts as well as other aspects of training in our club. I could have a black t-shirt or some other t-shirt that makes me stand out. I believe that a master, an instructor and or an assistant should stand out on their deeds alone. The uniform is just dressing. if you need me to have a specific uniform on, our clubs don’t need you. I must admit that the Latosa Concepts escrima Offline movement diagramdifferent masters and grand masters I’ve been lucky enough to train under and learn from have all been there for their student. I try my best to do the same. I am far from a fighter today and I am proud of that. I am an instructor now and I have put my own training on a back burner to make my students better. GM Latosa, Master Lind and John Waller have all done this. My students make me a better instructor and make them better equipped to handle eventual situations on the street. I look at the bow as a hand shake while making a deal.
When we bow, we show that we will do our best to do our part and / or as a thank you for training. It is a part of the class and it is a must in  my view. When working with larger groups it helps to remind all parties to do their best regarding the agreement.

I’ve written some post regarding the respect, that I have for all the instructors I’ve been lucky enough to have.  Here are some posts:

Heroes and Mentors, The Lesson We Learn.

Fudge Factor and the Role of Instructors.

The last post on sparring drills

In just about all martial arts system and combative systems, there is some kind of formal start and end to a class / seminar or course. Call me old fashion, if you will, I like that idea.

1 måneds gratis træning selvforsvar københavn

There are quite few beginners starting at the DK FMA club lately. If you are reading this and wish to come to a free trial class, you will need to write an email to us below. The way things are going we’ll have to make Mondays the designated day for people who would like to try training with us. This should help me to focus on the students who have started. I like to spend some time with each student during class to feel and test what they can do. We are still offering a months free training when new members start training in the DK FMA and Self-defense Grp.

As I mentions several times, If the new training times are too much of a pain, we’ll just have to find another place to train. Give us some feed back  ( written email to danishFMA@gmail.com ) It will help us to make a decision, when we have our next meeting. Remember Allan is the secretary for the DK FMA club so you can also talk with him.
