The responsibility of power, Latosa Concepts FMA terminology.


I hope ya’ll are doing well. It’s time for another post, which I hope, will give you food for thought. Before I get started there are a few things that need “saying.”

  1. GM Rene Latosa is making the rounds. Make sure you get to one of his seminars if you can.
  2. Congratulations to D.K. and A.N. on the new grades. Well done. Both men were given there grades a while back, but it’s worth saying again.
  3. Remember members and former students  need to let us know if you are coming to the Before Christmas Christmas Party for the club.

Enough of that. Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. What is power, or for that sake responsibility ? Power can be uncomfortable for many people. I would venture to say/write that power is something that scares many power in many cases. The power and responsibility for our children can be the catalyst for profound change in us. For many of us it’s a scary thing in the beginning. Some people never really are relaxed with it. For some people power is the ability to live ones life without fear.

We have all seen people who don’t want to make a decision. They are just scared of the responsibility of power. Other in turn relish having the power and end up being real pains in bottom for others. In many ways, you can see the different types of people in the election process at the moment. Many younger people would like to just give all the power to the government in the hope that system and the people running it, are good people. Others think that the government should be smaller and less powerfull.

We see the same thing in the gun issue. Many people are not afraid to protect their individual power by way of concealed carry and others can’t stand the idea of the person next to them carrying a concealed weapon. Colin Noir touches on this subject in his introduction to the video below.

I have been lucky enough to help people several times in my life. The power, I have is not a firearm on my hip ( that would mean jail and expulsion from Denmark). The power I have is the my training. I have had many very good instructors who I have learned from. Add to that some life experiences, and I was able to help people at times in my life as well as avoiding violent conflicts, when others could see it would be a hard fight to get what they wanted from me and my family ( ill gotten gains).

That ability / power came from embracing the fact that part of power and responsibility for those in my care means doing what has to be done. In short taking on the responsibility as mine. Training combative sports, martial arts and other defensive system may not be scary for some people. Others feel very frightened by just walking past out little group training with wooden knives. (BTW, we worked on some knife scenario training at Saturday’s training yesterday.) I can tell you from experience that the guy, that an American and a Russian protected from three men with bottles is not upset about the training those two individuals had, or the fact that they were willing to help him. All of the others looking on did not feel like they could help. They were powerless! I was told this by many people who heard what I ( The American ) did. Should we go through life with a feeling of no power? You should ask yourself that. My family always had firearms when I was kid. We were raised with what could happen when one was handled incorrectly. In short I was raised to respect power and understand that I had it as well as my father. My families safety was my responsibility when my father was not home.

We all have to develop power and the responsibility of power. If we don’t, we will never be whole. How can we be good parents unless we have the power to say “no” when our children need to hear that word. Feeling incapable to parent our children means our children will not grow to be responsible, powerfull and truly happy people.

The colleges in the states have become political correct hot beds of late. Part of understanding the power we have is seeing all aspects of it. By not saying or thinking something we are cheating ourselves of the responsibility of power. In shorts we are sheep. Sheep have no power. They enjoy the protection of the sheep dog when needed but are scared by it’s presence when there are no wolves around.

We can’t be powerful, aka responsible when we refuse to do what needs tone done (a self-defense situation) or say what needs to be said ( example of parenting) if we done except the responsibility! I get the fact, that not everybody needs a combative / self-defense instructor like myself. Some people might want a bjj or some other type of instructor. What needs to be understood is not taking on the responsibility for your own and your families safety gives the power to someone else.  You can’t say anything bad about what was done to you if yo have always given your power away to other people.

Btw., if we lived in Texas, my whole family would have firearms training. We are in Denmark, so my firearm has to be my knowledge of FMA and self-defense. The Danish and the American idea of responsibility for ones family are quite different. In one case the  government has all the power ergo has to protect the people as well as it can. In the other case people feel the responsibility for their families protection.  For the Danes this could relate to “bestandshjælp”/ welfare  contra  “A-kassen” / unemployment insurance.

Embracing our power and responsibility can be seen in many ways. I know I have embraced the responsibility for my family’s health and well being instead of going along with the budget based treatments that we might experience in the health care system here in DK.

Escrima and self-defense is just one facit of embracing responsibility and power.

I hope ya’ll are doing well. It’s time for a little update for our Escrima and Self-defense club in Copenhagen. I might even throw some theory in with the mix. Though it will most likely be in the next post.

dansk FMA og selvforsvars gruppeFirst thing first! The yearly general assembly for DK FMA and Self-defense will be held the 12 of March. ( DK FMA Generalforsamling 2016 ) That’s a Saturday. We’ll start the meeting at 16:00. The general program is as follows.

In order  plan our way through dinner and dessert. We’ll plan who brings a salad and who brings cheese, dessert and so on.That means YOU HAVE TO LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING AND IF YOU HAVE A WOMEN WITH YOU! If you have something you want to make let Jeanette and I know!

Former members are welcome as well. It’s always great to hear from you. If you are aLatosa Concepts dinner party november 2012 former member and plan on coming at 17:00. Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundTo start with I hope ya’ll are doing well. The subject for todays terminology post is bowing at the beginning and end of class. We’ll see where the post goes and if I throw a few other subjects in at the same time. One subject is Monday trial training day.

Why do we bow and where does it come from? To start with the last point first… we bow the way we do because GM Latosa said we should do it like that. I was told the story goes back to a tournament in with he showed the fighter how to bow. In short, it is a #2 strike in box form. Other FMA systems have their own way of doing it as well.

Now, lets get to the WHY. We bow to show respect for each other. I write EACH OTHER, because I have respect for students and I expect them to show the same respect in return. That should be expanded to the respect that all students should show to each other.

Latosa Concepts from GM Rene LatosaI don’t say; “bow to me” like some instructors do. That is my decision, just as the fact that, we all have the same t-shirts as well as other aspects of training in our club. I could have a black t-shirt or some other t-shirt that makes me stand out. I believe that a master, an instructor and or an assistant should stand out on their deeds alone. The uniform is just dressing. if you need me to have a specific uniform on, our clubs don’t need you. I must admit that the Latosa Concepts escrima Offline movement diagramdifferent masters and grand masters I’ve been lucky enough to train under and learn from have all been there for their student. I try my best to do the same. I am far from a fighter today and I am proud of that. I am an instructor now and I have put my own training on a back burner to make my students better. GM Latosa, Master Lind and John Waller have all done this. My students make me a better instructor and make them better equipped to handle eventual situations on the street. I look at the bow as a hand shake while making a deal.
When we bow, we show that we will do our best to do our part and / or as a thank you for training. It is a part of the class and it is a must in  my view. When working with larger groups it helps to remind all parties to do their best regarding the agreement.

In just about all martial arts system and combative systems, there is some kind of formal start and end to a class / seminar or course. Call me old fashion, if you will, I like that idea.

There are quite few beginners starting at the DK FMA club lately. If you are reading this and wish to come to a free trial class, you will need to write an email to us below. The way things are going we’ll have to make Mondays the designated day for people who would like to try training with us. This should help me to focus on the students who have started. I like to spend some time with each student during class to feel and test what they can do. We are still offering a months free training when new members start training in the DK FMA and Self-defense Grp.

As I mentions several times, If the new training times are too much of a pain, we’ll just have to find another place to train. Give us some feed back  ( written email to danishFMA@gmail.com ) It will help us to make a decision, when we have our next meeting. Remember Allan is the secretary for the DK FMA club so you can also talk with him.

Latosa Concepts Logo white pict.To start with i hope ya’ll are doing well. It’s been a while since there has been an update for the club and what else is happening in general.

So let’s get started. Starting on the 18th of January class will start at 16:45 to make room for a new wrestling class for kids. We’ll stop training at 18:15. We are still in the grip of winter, so there is no outdoor training training on Saturdays. In other words Monday and Wednesday are the days to get your FMA on.

Regarding the new training time, we’ll have to see how things go. The number of members who train on a more regular basis is limited because of the extra shift work. Aka, terror and security jobs. If It turns out that the new times are a problem for the members, we’ll have to start looking for a new training facility or find another room in Grøndals Center. We’ll give it a chance and see what happens.

Remember that the first month of training, when you become a member, is free.

A is still well on his way to the next grade. His understanding and ability to use GM Latosa’s basic box is growing. A new members, J has started and done well. He should pick up the skills needed for the 1st grade quickly. N is doing well with the 2 stick training and the progression of the 1 stick skills for other grades.

With all that said,we are working on sparring drills and strike training once again. We’ll see what the next pet project and theme for training will be. Before Christmas, my pet project was focus and intent with capital letters. The kettlebells will make a return soon. That much is certain.

GM Rene Latosa is once again booking his calendar for future. So, with that said have a look at his FB page … FB Link to see where he will be.

That’s all the practical stuff. So let’s talk about Terminology and why we are focusing on sparring drills at the moment. The basic sparring drill for the 2nd is an excellent place to start. When we look at the reasons for a planned sparring drill, we can talk/write about the benefit of moving from a counter strike mind set to an attacking mind set. Looking at mind set and the mental states we experience when switching between the role of Bad Guy and Good Guy, we learn to be more mentally elastic. One way to look at it is that we are not easily knocked from our ability to adapt. At least if we have learned that lesson from the planned sparring drills.

Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 1What else can we learn from a planned sparring drill? To start with the drill the men work on for the second grade alternates attacks. Both persons start with a #5 ( low stab),they do a # 1 or # 2 strike, a #3 strike and a high #4 strike. One subject to work on is the ability to flow from one start position to a counter attack or attack (depending on the role) and learning to believe in the attack and move on. Many people like to stop mid-stream and check to see if they did it (what ever it may be) correctly. As we progress with the sparring drills we need to get away from checking to see if something worked and just get on with the next strike. looking down at the #5 attack is and example of this. I teach people to see everything and not focus on the stick, punch or knife. There many other self-defense skills that can be adjusted while working on planned sparring drills.

We can do the same drill with 2 sticks and or a  mix of 1 stick and 2 sticks or any other combo. This could be knife vs stick, or palm stick vs 2 sticks. You get the Idea. N is working on the next level of 2 stick training as I wrote earlier. He has the chance to mix differing attacks with the 2 sticks into the mix. This is one way to work on what some systems call sinawali drills…. Hitting in specific patterns. Because he ( N ) knows what is coming next, he can relax mentally and focus on starting his counter strike from a new start position and so on.

Some of the best sparring drills I have worked on were some routines my old instructor put together. Master Lars kept us on our toes when we did them. I am looking forward to seeing my students at DK FMA work on some of the same drills.

Here’s a rant while on the subject. We all need to recognise where we get our knowledgeLatosa Concepts Escrima. Training, seminars and friends past and present from. Some instructors don’t do this! GM Latosa has always been my guiding light. With that said the man who kept me on the path was Master Lars. We all evolve and learn in different ways. We should never be too proud, angry, or just full of our selves to not give credit where it is due. Remember that when you see krav mega doing escrima / fma or see an instructor with a cv that’s just made up bull poop!

Danish FMA and Self-Defense grp. training update  05-2015.

I’ll be touching on the summer training plan, the new 4th grade students, new members and a few other other subjects in this blog post.

To start with, I hope ya’ll are doing well. Lets’ get straight to it.

Screen Shot 2015-05-17 at 11.03.35Congratulations to J.K. and N.H. on passing the 4th grade level for Latosa Concepts, FMA. The grades are well deserved men! Both men have been with me a while now and have worked long and hard for the grades they have. I don’t give grades away. The next grade will most likely go much quicker now that they have a good foundation to build on. They have worked on bettering all the grade requirements for the previous grades as well as building a solid basic working knowledge of the 2 stick open-8 drills for 4th gr. as well as the 2 stick high, high, low drill. They have worked on some of the many types of sparring drills we use. An example is a 1 stick free sparring drill in which A attacks twice and B attacks once, then they continue repeating the sequence again and again.

To get the 4th student grade, the men had a grading requirement drill that goes with thestokkekamp københavnmed Dansk FMA Gruppe 3 4th. It is a palm stick drill and unarmed drill in one, as with many of the drills we work on. The reason being transition. Add to that, all the drills that are a common drill for each and every person in the club and you have a handful of drills and subjects for the men to work on.

They will be starting on 2 stick fig-8 drills and live hand drills as well as many other subjects and improvements of the earlier grades. We are finished with the kindergarten drills.

The next subject is fight day. I had planned on doing this last week, everybody’s jobs got in the way. We might break it up into sections of training, so everybody gets a chance… once again because of work etc. It’s important to have a full contact version of training from time to time to make sure nobody has taught themselves to not hit the attacker. I know it sounds weird, but I have seen it many times with higher grades and lower grades. It pure and simple muscle memory / nervous system memory.

With that said, Look into some padding for your arms and hands men. If you don’t haveFMA og selvforsvar træning i københavn hockey gloves…get them. I use hard shin guard /protectors for soccer / football (Eu). Crotch protection is worth it as well. For those people who want a vest, we have two. I know some of the men have their own helmets. They are worth the investment. As we progress, helmet training with out padded sticks is the next progression of the training. This gets back to muscle / nervous system memory and the mental ability to really trust what you can do. There is nothing like a person hitting full force to crutch your head when it comes to a BULLSH_t DETECTOR. With that said, we start on that training when each person is ready for it.

The T-shirts are ready. I hope to pick them up this week. I know my t-shirts are ready for retirement after so many training sessions. I’ll look into the shorts and pant next.

The summer training plan is up at the Danish FMA and Self-Defense grp. website now. Click here to see more. I’ll be posting some information about the summer event as soon as possible. It will most likely be the usual. Bring your own food and babe. We’ll see what we work out for training. Maybe an introduction  to what we do for non members of the grp. / club.

We are starting a “1st month free campaign for the club.” When you start trainingselvforsvar træning i københavn 2 with us, you train free the first month. It’s time to get some more people into training. S. K. needs a polishing before he test for his grade… 3rd LC, FMA grade. This will be a good time for new members to start. Hopefully there will be plenty of outdoor classes ( Saturdays) now that the weather is getting warmer here in DK.

What should new members expect? That’s a good question. My lovely wife says thatEscrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 1 she is used to seeing what we do. So I can’t use her as a gauge anymore. Allan Nielsen, Club Secretary, and I were talking about how his friends look at what we do. They say we are extreme. New members are not expected to handle the same attacks and pressure that the 2 new 4th grade students are expected to handle.

The 1st grade is basically designed to help people learn to see the angel and learn to understand the basic body mechanics that we talk about. You learn these things as well as learning to defend yourself against basic attacks. In short it is a learning process. Nobody will be hitting you with 100% power and intent. When we had our circle training last week. People were expected to perform to their own abilities when they were put into the middle of the circle ( aka  “Lions Den”). Btw, that’s just us having fun with the name of the drill. We should never forget that we are just big boys and girls! You gotta have fun.

Regarding strength and condition during our classes. We do not expect anything Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 4other than you doing your best. A typical strength and condition drill is push ups. We do a set number or the number that you can do. If you can’t do one version of push-up then you do a version that you can do. N.H. is a physical therapist and I am a PT, kettlebell coach etc. You are in good hands.

It your responsibility to fit into the grp as a new member. We do not and will not accept trouble makers into the grp. PERIOD! We are down to earth people, who want to have fun training our abilities to defend ourselves and our families. See the link here for the club website. If you don’t read Danish we will translate.

Until then, I have posted some old and new clips. Some of what you see in the video is from when N. and I trained at the beach the other day. Other clips are from when more of us  had our sparring day at the beach about a month ago. And yet other clips are from before my shoulder / collar bone injury.

To the men helping me to get back to what I used to be regarding escrima. Thanks men for all the help and thanks for being my training partners. I know it can be painful from time to time. I feel the need for more hitting sit-ups!

I hope ya’ll are doing well. This is going to be a bit of a rant or me just bitc….g about a subject and some thoughts on the subject.

It’s no secret that I am training my self up again after a nasty collar bone injury. This goes for normal strength and conditioning and LC Escrima training. Speaking of which, thanks for a cool training session at the beach yesterday Niklas! This old fart could feel it afterwards. I’m glad that I stayed at the beach to just lay around for a while. I’m looking forward to next time we train together.

Any Hoo! Back to the subject. Some of us were training at the beach and doing our best to not feel the heat. It was a hot day! For myself, I was doing my best to not feel my hectic schedule and the lack of sleep. In short “old fart stuff”! I felt all the 8,10,& 20 kg boxes I lift all day long. 😉 The inspiration for this blog entry came from the fact that there was a group training at the beach not far away, and the instructor and 2 group members seem to really not understand the idea of personal space when walking by. Some would call it just stupid where I come from in Texas and in some circles here in DK. Provoking people training escrima is just silly! Add to that they did it twice just to prove a point….?

Any Hoo!! Back to the subject. Personal space is different everywhere in the world. In crowded country/cities, where there is a true mix of poor and other economic groups, like some Philippine cities, you will find people walking up against you without thinking about it. The New York streets could be another example of many people packed together in a small space. Here in DK, there is an odd mix of an understanding of personal space and a general respect, and there is a blatant habit of just doing something like walking too close when there is A LOT of space all around. It’s something you expect from teenage boys learning to find boundaries not instructors with a t-shirt proclaiming instructor for a club in Hellerup / Copenhagen. You see it also in young children of 1-5 years old because they are so focused on an end goal ( or something they saw) that they forget the world around them. Think of a 3 yr. old at the beach with his/her bucket and shovel and they have to dig right there beside you because they saw something in the sand. You smile and giggle at it when there is no expectation of normal social codes and more. It’s cute in many ways. And yes, I wrote cute. Blackmail me. 😉

It does not belong in the realm of instructors of crossfit! (hint), personal trainers!, self-defense trainers! and other coaches or teachers! There is supposed to be an understanding of respect for personal space! This understanding of respect for others personal space transcends other subjects like other people’s feeling as well as their opinions. As a personal trainer/ instructor, you have to understand the type of person you are working with. Once again, another reason, that I had a hard time not just getting down right angry at the lack of respect the instructor showed. Many of the people ( in the area ) who were curious asked if they could sit down close by and watch or just showed some respect and walked around…. leaving  a decent amount of space between them self and us. There are always dumb teenage boy trying to prove something and provoke a response, but they don’t have a t-shirt on declaring “instructor……” and they are not responsible for a group. They are not paid to lead!

You could say that it was not worth getting worked up about. Forget it and move on. We have to remember, that instructors set a tone for the group in which they are a members of or teach in. It’s the same for higher grades in martial arts. This is getting back to the big brother / little brother idea. Sociologist have performed studies on behaviour in groups. It’s common knowledge that one person cheating seems to open the flood gate for the next few then the whole group. There is a cool video on the subject. The speaker uses the expression….  fudge factor. If someone, like an instructor, does not respect one groups personal space then the people he is teaching tend let themselves invade other people space. There were many families and groups at the beach who experience the same thing we did. This will not end here, btw. I am just cooling down before I talk with the local club responsible.

When I was running around in clubs in Texas, chasing women and dancing, there were places, where almost everyone was nice, because anyone was ready to fight for keeps, if pushed to far. A fight could get real ugly really fast! The very unprofessional instructors and his two groupies would not last long where I come from. Then we could look at the totally unprofessional behaviour of the person and the implications down the line….. economic, and moral. I can tell you there are several people at the beach that day who will never get close to the club in question.

One reason this angers me so, is because, I take teaching very seriously. Instructors are guides in life in many ways.  That’s why I like to be called coach. A coach sets an example while trying to give to those willing to listen. Yet another reason I like instructors like R. Latosa & Martin Rooney. One of the reason I took the job of training the ice skaters, was that I like to see the development of young people to a type of person with a life code not to mention the development of tools and abilities that might make them an olympic athlete. When I say/write life code, I am referring to a way of treating others as you would like to be treated, a way of living up to a higher moral way of treating others, & living as well as showing respect for one self.

Good instructors / coaches and other teaching professionals try to understand the people they train / coach so that they can help them as much as possible. They want to inspire not lead people down the wrong path of blatant disrespect. This leads to the student not respecting themselves in the end and the cycle starts all over again.

/attacker / assailant fast and hard is best in many cases. Destroying the power in his attack is also a good idea in many cases. By slightly adjusting a  #1 downward towards the attackers weapon, hand or arm the attackers #1 strike is a tool against him. He is open and out of balance. The problem with training /sparring with people in your own training group is that they have the same plan and know what to do. In short it looks ugly sometimes. It looks like people trading blows.

forth in much more a degree, than we have shown in some of the video from older posts. Once again there are factors the “lookers-on” have to take into consideration. The strikes to the head would take a person out if they happened on the street. The strikes to the hands would cause the assailants to drop the weapon on the street. The same goes for the good hits to the arms. In short, what you see is not what you get when you watch sparring with protective gear. The sticks we use for sparring are fully padded rattan sticks. A hit to the head or hand with a real blunt object have a defined effect that can’t be denied. Things break. Once again, people don’t have hockey gloves on the street! Went through it like butter with a hot knife!

Be it a knife, a blunt object you might have in your hand, or some other object you find in the general vicinity, something happens when hard / sharp / pointed objects hit the human body. Many people forget that when they watch two people trading blows.

In reality, it’s all about hitting the other guy faster than he can hit you. When that skill set is learned, then the fancy stuff can be trained. In my book at least. I could see that in our beach session, before I took a well needed 2 week break from training. The old fart needed the rest after he sparred with some young guys full of way too much energy! 😉

As always it’s good to work on a theme for a while before switching to a new focus point or concept. Next time it will be a little more movement offline with the attacks. That will happen naturally with two stick matches, because they demand room, if the sticks are not to get bound up by the other man’s arms. When we put the gear on again the “lookers-on” will see prettier sparring sessions. After that, we’ll get back to the hard ugly stuff again. You get what you practice.

BTW, well done guys. For all the old farts out there. Make sure you get your sleep before doing 2 minutes sparring and 1 min rest with a bunch of wiper-snappers! I didn’t and paid the price. 😉

I hope ya’ll are doing well. This will be an escrima terminology post about a subject that popped up because of some old video I put up here on the blog in the last last blog post.

Before I get into that, I just got back from the Copenhagen Middle Age Market. My son and I made an outing of it. It does the soul good to get out and bond with your son. Get off the sofa right this moment, if you haven’t done it in a while! We both have the same interest. Knowing some of the people, who are doing the Battle of Nations style fighting and some other sword training styles made for a good start. I was lucky enough to see a whole mess of old friends, students, training partners and and even my earlier instructor, Lars Lind. My son and I even got a drinking horn from the trip. AAARG! ARRRG!

Any Hoo! Back to the real subject at hand. As I wrote, the free sparring video of the guys in our training group is the reason for this blog entry. In one of the videos you hear me saying that movement is king.

Do I mean people should hop around like Muhammad Ali in his early years?  The answer is a resounding …NO! We are not bunny rabbits! A good way to understand what movement does is when cars start a race from a rolling start. This rolling start does not have to be that exaggerated or extreme. In fact, in our case, it can be totally mental or just the slightest movement in how tight your fist is clinched. The idea is not to stagnate or fall into a moment of unawareness. A moment of unawareness is just as much of an opening/window of attack as an arm that falls.

Another aspect of this movement is that it can put you at a distance that allows a short moment of less attention. In our training group, we like to press in & fly out while attacking a target such as an arm after a combination / attack sequence is done. As long as we are in close, we have to be hyper vigilant and aware of dangers. Now that my arm is doing better and I am training with the group again, I do enjoy my little breaks. Old farts need to breath and keep the distance more often than the young men. 😉

We hear that our concentration span is shorter today. Having a well developed concentration span is very good in a self-defense / sparring session and every day life. When the body becomes tired the mind want to take little breaks as well. It takes discipline to not give way to this urge when sparring and / or defending our selves. Forcing ourselves to move little parts of our body or weapon help to avoid mental stagnation and a head ache or worse!

Any Hoo! Movement is king is not jumping around like a hyper active bunny! It’s all about keeping the mental and physical energy going so we can act and react when we need to.
