Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 4I hope ya’ll are doing well. I thought it was time to touch base with a few idea’s for the new members and a reminder for the other members.

Before I go too far, a tip og the hat to MA in Jutland. His group is doing well and growing. I am also working on some more sticks this bunch should be heavier.

The new men are experiencing the fact that we are a hitting system when we lookout the first few grades. The 1st grade is all about balance and learning to control our bodies. The men hear a lot about the pushing back leg, dropping power, the power leg and high starting positions.

As part of the striking theme, we are following right now, there is pad work, tire work and hitting sit-ups. Hitting sit-ups help with pulling the stick / hands back too far. They are one of the many drills we learned from GM Rene Latosa. They also help to coordinate the strikes with one of the power mechanisms that we use … the stomach and lats.

The men are also doing a hitting warm up on the tires to help work on the timing of the feet and the contact point (we are talking about time here!) many people will step in too far to use the strike or weapon they intended simply because they can’t control the happy feet. 😉

Foot work is great but unneeded footwork and /or at the wrong time will give you a head ache and/or take the power and balance out of your strike. The same goes for unneeded offline movement when we have the upper hand. AKA we are a head because of position and other factors.

pr 24 vs knifeI’m looking forward to seeing the new men go through the development that the rest of the group has gone through.  I don’t want to get into to much of it, but we can use an idea and the new men can think about it. Lets say the foot moves at a given speed (X) and the arm moves at another (Y) speed.  Now lets say the student steps a given distance when striking  (Z). If the math nerds haven’t figured it out yet we can can adjust one factor ( x, y, or z) and affect the strike.  Making people aware of this relationship is an ongoing learning curve. The new men are starting with it during the preparation for the 1st grade test. It’s down right amazing what we can do when we adjust these three factors or add some more factors to the equation.

Niklas is working on controlling these same factors, just with two sticks now. To a certain degree he is repeating the second grade just with 2 sticks.

And for the beginners, Some governing ideas / concepts we use are these gifts of awareness from GM Latosa.

  • Balance
  • Speed timing and distance
  • Focus
  • Power
  • Transition

They all are factors we use and more.You will continue to hear about them during the classes.

For non members, we train on Mondays and Wednesdays at 16:45- 18:15 at Grøndals Multicenter in Copenhagen. When we have some better weather we can start talking about beach training, wk-end training and more again. Make sure you email so we can plan a trial session for you. That’s on Monday from now on! Having people pop in almost every day is keeping me from the actual members.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundTo start with I hope ya’ll are doing well. The subject for todays terminology post is bowing at the beginning and end of class. We’ll see where the post goes and if I throw a few other subjects in at the same time. One subject is Monday trial training day.

Why do we bow and where does it come from? To start with the last point first… we bow the way we do because GM Latosa said we should do it like that. I was told the story goes back to a tournament in with he showed the fighter how to bow. In short, it is a #2 strike in box form. Other FMA systems have their own way of doing it as well.

Now, lets get to the WHY. We bow to show respect for each other. I write EACH OTHER, because I have respect for students and I expect them to show the same respect in return. That should be expanded to the respect that all students should show to each other.

Latosa Concepts from GM Rene LatosaI don’t say; “bow to me” like some instructors do. That is my decision, just as the fact that, we all have the same t-shirts as well as other aspects of training in our club. I could have a black t-shirt or some other t-shirt that makes me stand out. I believe that a master, an instructor and or an assistant should stand out on their deeds alone. The uniform is just dressing. if you need me to have a specific uniform on, our clubs don’t need you. I must admit that the Latosa Concepts escrima Offline movement diagramdifferent masters and grand masters I’ve been lucky enough to train under and learn from have all been there for their student. I try my best to do the same. I am far from a fighter today and I am proud of that. I am an instructor now and I have put my own training on a back burner to make my students better. GM Latosa, Master Lind and John Waller have all done this. My students make me a better instructor and make them better equipped to handle eventual situations on the street. I look at the bow as a hand shake while making a deal.
When we bow, we show that we will do our best to do our part and / or as a thank you for training. It is a part of the class and it is a must in  my view. When working with larger groups it helps to remind all parties to do their best regarding the agreement.

There are quite few beginners starting at the DK FMA club lately. If you are reading this and wish to come to a free trial class, you will need to write an email to us below. The way things are going we’ll have to make Mondays the designated day for people who would like to try training with us. This should help me to focus on the students who have started. I like to spend some time with each student during class to feel and test what they can do. We are still offering a months free training when new members start training in the DK FMA and Self-defense Grp.

As I mentions several times, If the new training times are too much of a pain, we’ll just have to find another place to train. Give us some feed back  ( written email to danishFMA@gmail.com ) It will help us to make a decision, when we have our next meeting. Remember Allan is the secretary for the DK FMA club so you can also talk with him.

Latosa Concepts Logo white pict.To start with i hope ya’ll are doing well. It’s been a while since there has been an update for the club and what else is happening in general.

So let’s get started. Starting on the 18th of January class will start at 16:45 to make room for a new wrestling class for kids. We’ll stop training at 18:15. We are still in the grip of winter, so there is no outdoor training training on Saturdays. In other words Monday and Wednesday are the days to get your FMA on.

Regarding the new training time, we’ll have to see how things go. The number of members who train on a more regular basis is limited because of the extra shift work. Aka, terror and security jobs. If It turns out that the new times are a problem for the members, we’ll have to start looking for a new training facility or find another room in Grøndals Center. We’ll give it a chance and see what happens.

Remember that the first month of training, when you become a member, is free.

A is still well on his way to the next grade. His understanding and ability to use GM Latosa’s basic box is growing. A new members, J has started and done well. He should pick up the skills needed for the 1st grade quickly. N is doing well with the 2 stick training and the progression of the 1 stick skills for other grades.

With all that said,we are working on sparring drills and strike training once again. We’ll see what the next pet project and theme for training will be. Before Christmas, my pet project was focus and intent with capital letters. The kettlebells will make a return soon. That much is certain.

GM Rene Latosa is once again booking his calendar for future. So, with that said have a look at his FB page … FB Link to see where he will be.

That’s all the practical stuff. So let’s talk about Terminology and why we are focusing on sparring drills at the moment. The basic sparring drill for the 2nd is an excellent place to start. When we look at the reasons for a planned sparring drill, we can talk/write about the benefit of moving from a counter strike mind set to an attacking mind set. Looking at mind set and the mental states we experience when switching between the role of Bad Guy and Good Guy, we learn to be more mentally elastic. One way to look at it is that we are not easily knocked from our ability to adapt. At least if we have learned that lesson from the planned sparring drills.

Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 1What else can we learn from a planned sparring drill? To start with the drill the men work on for the second grade alternates attacks. Both persons start with a #5 ( low stab),they do a # 1 or # 2 strike, a #3 strike and a high #4 strike. One subject to work on is the ability to flow from one start position to a counter attack or attack (depending on the role) and learning to believe in the attack and move on. Many people like to stop mid-stream and check to see if they did it (what ever it may be) correctly. As we progress with the sparring drills we need to get away from checking to see if something worked and just get on with the next strike. looking down at the #5 attack is and example of this. I teach people to see everything and not focus on the stick, punch or knife. There many other self-defense skills that can be adjusted while working on planned sparring drills.

We can do the same drill with 2 sticks and or a  mix of 1 stick and 2 sticks or any other combo. This could be knife vs stick, or palm stick vs 2 sticks. You get the Idea. N is working on the next level of 2 stick training as I wrote earlier. He has the chance to mix differing attacks with the 2 sticks into the mix. This is one way to work on what some systems call sinawali drills…. Hitting in specific patterns. Because he ( N ) knows what is coming next, he can relax mentally and focus on starting his counter strike from a new start position and so on.

Some of the best sparring drills I have worked on were some routines my old instructor put together. Master Lars kept us on our toes when we did them. I am looking forward to seeing my students at DK FMA work on some of the same drills.

Here’s a rant while on the subject. We all need to recognise where we get our knowledgeLatosa Concepts Escrima. Training, seminars and friends past and present from. Some instructors don’t do this! GM Latosa has always been my guiding light. With that said the man who kept me on the path was Master Lars. We all evolve and learn in different ways. We should never be too proud, angry, or just full of our selves to not give credit where it is due. Remember that when you see krav mega doing escrima / fma or see an instructor with a cv that’s just made up bull poop!

I hope ya’ll are doing well. The sun is shining strongly here in DK. Old Texans like that! I just got back from the beach where we got our fill of free vitamin D. Now it’s time to sit in the shade and put a few words down for ya’ll out there in internet world.

/attacker / assailant fast and hard is best in many cases. Destroying the power in his attack is also a good idea in many cases. By slightly adjusting a  #1 downward towards the attackers weapon, hand or arm the attackers #1 strike is a tool against him. He is open and out of balance. The problem with training /sparring with people in your own training group is that they have the same plan and know what to do. In short it looks ugly sometimes. It looks like people trading blows.

forth in much more a degree, than we have shown in some of the video from older posts. Once again there are factors the “lookers-on” have to take into consideration. The strikes to the head would take a person out if they happened on the street. The strikes to the hands would cause the assailants to drop the weapon on the street. The same goes for the good hits to the arms. In short, what you see is not what you get when you watch sparring with protective gear. The sticks we use for sparring are fully padded rattan sticks. A hit to the head or hand with a real blunt object have a defined effect that can’t be denied. Things break. Once again, people don’t have hockey gloves on the street! Most people will use an object that does not bend like the stick in a picture above. Check out the melon bash we did a time back. Click here. It will also give an idea of what happens.

Went through it like butter with a hot knife!

Be it a knife, a blunt object you might have in your hand, or some other object you find in the general vicinity, something happens when hard / sharp / pointed objects hit the human body. Many people forget that when they watch two people trading blows.

In reality, it’s all about hitting the other guy faster than he can hit you. When that skill set is learned, then the fancy stuff can be trained. In my book at least. I could see that in our beach session, before I took a well needed 2 week break from training. The old fart needed the rest after he sparred with some young guys full of way too much energy! 😉

As always it’s good to work on a theme for a while before switching to a new focus point or concept. Next time it will be a little more movement offline with the attacks. That will happen naturally with two stick matches, because they demand room, if the sticks are not to get bound up by the other man’s arms. When we put the gear on again the “lookers-on” will see prettier sparring sessions. After that, we’ll get back to the hard ugly stuff again. You get what you practice.

BTW, well done guys. For all the old farts out there. Make sure you get your sleep before doing 2 minutes sparring and 1 min rest with a bunch of wiper-snappers! I didn’t and paid the price. 😉

LC black logo pict.The sun is shinning and I am sitting in the sun getting some vitamin-D. (The mac has it’s own umbrella!) It’s also good for Texans stuck in Denmark to get some sun regarding that precious mental state. It keeps us some what normal. 😉 That and the machete training with country tunes playing in our ear plugs. I hope ya’ll are doing well also. If not, make it so!

I was thinking about mid-range training vs short range training the other day. I thought it would be a good subject for the blog. Before we get too far into that…. GM Rene Latosa is running around in Europe doing seminars. For the people who are ready for some training with the man himself, get off your butt and check out his schedule on his site or Facebook. as I have written many times, It’s well worth the time.

I’m looking forward to seeing him again when I’m ready to start doing more heavy training. The kb’s snatches are going to be my test. When my shoulder is OK with KB snatches, then I know I’m ready. I hope to be ready for the next time he is here in Europe. The trick is to keep up the baby steps so the SC joint doesn’t become pushed too far too fast.

Any hoo, here we go. When we watch videos on Youtube or go to a seminar with an instructor from another system, we see different approaches to teaching and training. Some have the stick held so that there is a 90 degree angle in the wrist and some others are just the opposite in that they let the wrist break. They usually use the energy of the circular momentum. The first mentioned will usually use the energy in the fist. The different uses of energy are part of what decides the range they start with, in many cases.

Some systems are more occupied with long range training, some work a lot at mid-range, while others are preoccupied with short range. The way I learned Latosa Escrima ( that was when GM Rene was still with the Germans), we focused on mid-range and shorter ranges ( butt strikes and punches ) to start with. Some of the reasons are simple. When learning short range first, we have to be aware of attacks that we are blind to. It’s just a physical fact that it’s hard to see whats happening at the belt  level, when we are standing close to an attacker / assailant.  Starting with mid-range attacks makes it easier to see windows of attack and what’s coming at you. This also makes it possible to learn to read people and be aware of tells or signals that an attack is coming from an area/position. Other ranges can be thrown into the mix with time.

One of the advantages of using weapons as tools to understand concepts and a way of thinking is that putting the power into the end of the stick/ cutting edge /tool is still possible when doing short range strikes. You don’t have to hold the stick in a locked 90 degree angle. In reality, all you have to do is to think you have something long in your hand and hit as if you do! You see where I’m going, I hope. This is one of the reasons, I love the way GM Latosa teaches. This is also one of the reasons that I am not alone in my love of thinking conceptually rather than using stiffly defined ways of performing techniques. Rules can be broken once you know what you are doing. Everything just becomes variations. This could be variations of a #2 strike to variations of a #5 strike.

If you are looking for some training inspiration … I have an idea for you. I did it after A giant stepmy morning coffee today. Once you are ready for real machetes use them to warm up. They will test your ability to control the energy created when doing double fig-8’s. Do that for 10 minutes to warm up. if you are a stick person use them. Now get the kettlebells out.  Do one light set of swings, side lunges, clean and deep squats. After that do double swings @ 10-15 reps, side lunges @ 10 reps to each side, 10 clean w/ deep squats @10 reps. Do 4- 5 sets. You could also throw your boy around 😉 I did some core training afterwards and ate a big breakfast.

Rolf F, the escrima instructor from Finland brought up some subject that would make a subject for our escrima part of this blog. I will touch on some of them.

Why do we train drills in the order that we do? We can look at the 1st grade drills. As with most systems, there is a mental aspect as well as a physical aspect to the training.  If a student learns to stand still and attack  an attacker, the student leans to focus on doing a good counter attack or striking the BAD GUY ( BG) before he gets his attack off. This is important because it limits the amount of things the students has to focus on. Just standing still, the student learns to read the BG which also makes it easier to see the windows of opportunity that are opened. The next step is moving to the best place in order to continue the attack. All this is done unarmed and armed. Foot work is then put into the drill after the student has begun to understand how timing and placement (of the student…GOOD GUY= GG) are best utilized.

If we look at the way of building up the mental aspects (attacking mentality), mechanical power generation aspects, timing and placement, we can also use the same teaching method for footwork and other subjects. When a student works at moving on-line, at an angle to the left or right (be it slightly or a lot) we teaching the basic of reading attacks and understanding the dangers the BG presence through his angles of attack.

All this is “fine and dandy” until there is not time to move your feet or take a step to create a buffer zone and a preferred angle to the attacker. GM Rene’s drills with the BOX training is the next evolution. When we keep the right foot or the left foot forward at all times we are keeping the pressure on and our steps are more simple in nature as well as shorter. This saves time! Time can save you life when the BG attacks. Where it get’s a little kinky is where the twist in my your body is the two positions put together. The feet are still in the right foot forward position and the body and weapon are moved to a body position that resembles the buffering angles that the beginner learns. This is also where students start to work with generating power through the torque of the body. The basics of dropping power, using the arch of the weapon to redirect the BG and / or the weapon, the basics of timing & speed, V’ing in, preempting, etc are all other subjects we can work on improving. It’s all about TIME! Remember that preempting is a form of “block & lock.”

Tipping the weapon for extra power and distance has it’s uses, dangers and weaknesses. This has been moved to the later student grades to avoid bad habits. There were tendencies to leave the weapon out in a danger zone as well as letting the tip of the weapon come down too low. We have to remember that distance is time. Tipping the weapon adds length and opens windows of possibilities for the BG. These are also some of the reasons that it has been moved to later student grades. GM Rene was very aware of of this fact when he held his seminars for us. His seminars were quite basic in design and at the same time quite complex. An example is how it’s sometimes harder for people to just hit an attacker than it is to defend and that is because of mindset alone. We have gone full circle. We are getting back to the 1st  student grade again.
