  • No training Monday the 5 of June… holiday.
  • Instructor free training during weeks 29,30,31
  • We have started the strike pad training now that it’s warmer. Have your water, gloves and possibly an extra t-shirt with you.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundWe are back at it folks! Training with the old fart, aka the trainer, will be up and running on Monday, Aug 8-2016. 16:45. As club members know we follow a general theme for periods of time. The first theme will be strike pad training. Yes, you will need your water bottle with you.:)

I’ll post a video or two below to show possible strike pad training during the upcoming month. It may sound harsh to start with strike pad training out of the gates, but life is not always easy.  I’ve have been staying at summer vacation sites here in DK for the last 3 wks. I started the days with conditioning for LC Escrima and general martial arts/combative training. I hope all the members have been doing the same. 😉

Remember to have dark colored shorts / training pants and club t-shirts. As always dansk FMA og selvforsvars grupperemember to send a text, if you can’t make it to training or you are going to be late. We would rather see members come to training for the last hr. If you can’t make it from the very beginning of class start. Some people have already told me they will be starting up mid-month because of work etc. Get some basic training in so you don’t start up cold guys. 🙂 An example could be heavy bag training with strength training stations after. See the last post here on the blog.  It’s a good example.

I hope ya’ll are doing well. it’s time for some more inspiration for your strength and conditioning during the summer vacation or just any other day.

My family rents a summer house every summer. We just returned home after some time away. With my day job being as physically tough on my 51 yr old body, my vacation was a time for me to focus on my self every morning. This is a description of what I did after my coffee. I hope it inspires you to get off the sofa ! I did a type of station training, repeating the stations.

  1. Coffee and sitting in the yard watching the sun come up!Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 1
  2. Get the rope out and find a good tree to hang from
  3. Grab your Escrima tools, (Mine were: 2 sticks, 3 knives, and a hatchet that I made a ergonomic handle for)
  4. Start doing right handed and left handed fig-8, high-high-low, and many other patterns.
  5. Do a few sit-ups, push ups, back ext., squats and more to warm up.
  6. Now you can do free forming  or just strike pattern training with your weapon combo. Change every time you come back to it,
  7. Do one type of frontal sit-ups, then side/lateral core muscle training, then back extension Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 3of your desire.
  8. Do 2 types of push-ups every time you you start them.
  9. Do some lung training. Jumping from side to side. (see pictures)
  10. Do some pull and back shoulder training. (see picture)
  11. Repeat, repeat, repeat,repeat, repeat, repeat, and repeat all stations!
  12. Do some stretching
  13. Eat some breakfast, read a book or just hang out.Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 2
  14. The rest of the day should be used on your family.

Note!, the core training changed every time I did it, if you are looking for ideas, there are gobs of ideas on YouTube. The same for the push ups. There are many forms. Because you are doing this program every day, you should leave a little gas in the tank when doing the exercises. An example would be making sure you can do one or two more push-up etc. Then you stop and move on to the next exercise.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundI have done the same at the fitness center. The sticks were replaced with heavy bag work. Some exercises were, walking lunges, step ups, asymmetric squats, wrestlers press, pull ups and more. Today, I did bag work, deadlifts and twisting bend over rows and then core training. Tomorrow I will do pushing/squatting/lunge exercises with more core training and bag work.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundTo start with I hope ya’ll are doing well. The subject for todays terminology post is bowing at the beginning and end of class. We’ll see where the post goes and if I throw a few other subjects in at the same time. One subject is Monday trial training day.

Why do we bow and where does it come from? To start with the last point first… we bow the way we do because GM Latosa said we should do it like that. I was told the story goes back to a tournament in with he showed the fighter how to bow. In short, it is a #2 strike in box form. Other FMA systems have their own way of doing it as well.

Now, lets get to the WHY. We bow to show respect for each other. I write EACH OTHER, because I have respect for students and I expect them to show the same respect in return. That should be expanded to the respect that all students should show to each other.

Latosa Concepts from GM Rene LatosaI don’t say; “bow to me” like some instructors do. That is my decision, just as the fact that, we all have the same t-shirts as well as other aspects of training in our club. I could have a black t-shirt or some other t-shirt that makes me stand out. I believe that a master, an instructor and or an assistant should stand out on their deeds alone. The uniform is just dressing. if you need me to have a specific uniform on, our clubs don’t need you. I must admit that the Latosa Concepts escrima Offline movement diagramdifferent masters and grand masters I’ve been lucky enough to train under and learn from have all been there for their student. I try my best to do the same. I am far from a fighter today and I am proud of that. I am an instructor now and I have put my own training on a back burner to make my students better. GM Latosa, Master Lind and John Waller have all done this. My students make me a better instructor and make them better equipped to handle eventual situations on the street. I look at the bow as a hand shake while making a deal.
When we bow, we show that we will do our best to do our part and / or as a thank you for training. It is a part of the class and it is a must in  my view. When working with larger groups it helps to remind all parties to do their best regarding the agreement.

There are quite few beginners starting at the DK FMA club lately. If you are reading this and wish to come to a free trial class, you will need to write an email to us below. The way things are going we’ll have to make Mondays the designated day for people who would like to try training with us. This should help me to focus on the students who have started. I like to spend some time with each student during class to feel and test what they can do. We are still offering a months free training when new members start training in the DK FMA and Self-defense Grp.

As I mentions several times, If the new training times are too much of a pain, we’ll just have to find another place to train. Give us some feed back  ( written email to danishFMA@gmail.com ) It will help us to make a decision, when we have our next meeting. Remember Allan is the secretary for the DK FMA club so you can also talk with him.

Danish FMA and Self-Defense grp. training update  05-2015.

I’ll be touching on the summer training plan, the new 4th grade students, new members and a few other other subjects in this blog post.

To start with, I hope ya’ll are doing well. Lets’ get straight to it.

Screen Shot 2015-05-17 at 11.03.35Congratulations to J.K. and N.H. on passing the 4th grade level for Latosa Concepts, FMA. The grades are well deserved men! Both men have been with me a while now and have worked long and hard for the grades they have. I don’t give grades away. The next grade will most likely go much quicker now that they have a good foundation to build on. They have worked on bettering all the grade requirements for the previous grades as well as building a solid basic working knowledge of the 2 stick open-8 drills for 4th gr. as well as the 2 stick high, high, low drill. They have worked on some of the many types of sparring drills we use. An example is a 1 stick free sparring drill in which A attacks twice and B attacks once, then they continue repeating the sequence again and again.

To get the 4th student grade, the men had a grading requirement drill that goes with thestokkekamp københavnmed Dansk FMA Gruppe 3 4th. It is a palm stick drill and unarmed drill in one, as with many of the drills we work on. The reason being transition. Add to that, all the drills that are a common drill for each and every person in the club and you have a handful of drills and subjects for the men to work on.

They will be starting on 2 stick fig-8 drills and live hand drills as well as many other subjects and improvements of the earlier grades. We are finished with the kindergarten drills.

The next subject is fight day. I had planned on doing this last week, everybody’s jobs got in the way. We might break it up into sections of training, so everybody gets a chance… once again because of work etc. It’s important to have a full contact version of training from time to time to make sure nobody has taught themselves to not hit the attacker. I know it sounds weird, but I have seen it many times with higher grades and lower grades. It pure and simple muscle memory / nervous system memory.

With that said, Look into some padding for your arms and hands men. If you don’t haveFMA og selvforsvar træning i københavn hockey gloves…get them. I use hard shin guard /protectors for soccer / football (Eu). Crotch protection is worth it as well. For those people who want a vest, we have two. I know some of the men have their own helmets. They are worth the investment. As we progress, helmet training with out padded sticks is the next progression of the training. This gets back to muscle / nervous system memory and the mental ability to really trust what you can do. There is nothing like a person hitting full force to crutch your head when it comes to a BULLSH_t DETECTOR. With that said, we start on that training when each person is ready for it.

The T-shirts are ready. I hope to pick them up this week. I know my t-shirts are ready for retirement after so many training sessions. I’ll look into the shorts and pant next.

The summer training plan is up at the Danish FMA and Self-Defense grp. website now. Click here to see more. I’ll be posting some information about the summer event as soon as possible. It will most likely be the usual. Bring your own food and babe. We’ll see what we work out for training. Maybe an introduction  to what we do for non members of the grp. / club.

We are starting a “1st month free campaign for the club.” When you start trainingselvforsvar træning i københavn 2 with us, you train free the first month. It’s time to get some more people into training. S. K. needs a polishing before he test for his grade… 3rd LC, FMA grade. This will be a good time for new members to start. Hopefully there will be plenty of outdoor classes ( Saturdays) now that the weather is getting warmer here in DK.

What should new members expect? That’s a good question. My lovely wife says thatEscrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 1 she is used to seeing what we do. So I can’t use her as a gauge anymore. Allan Nielsen, Club Secretary, and I were talking about how his friends look at what we do. They say we are extreme. New members are not expected to handle the same attacks and pressure that the 2 new 4th grade students are expected to handle.

The 1st grade is basically designed to help people learn to see the angel and learn to understand the basic body mechanics that we talk about. You learn these things as well as learning to defend yourself against basic attacks. In short it is a learning process. Nobody will be hitting you with 100% power and intent. When we had our circle training last week. People were expected to perform to their own abilities when they were put into the middle of the circle ( aka  “Lions Den”). Btw, that’s just us having fun with the name of the drill. We should never forget that we are just big boys and girls! You gotta have fun.

Regarding strength and condition during our classes. We do not expect anything Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 4other than you doing your best. A typical strength and condition drill is push ups. We do a set number or the number that you can do. If you can’t do one version of push-up then you do a version that you can do. N.H. is a physical therapist and I am a PT, kettlebell coach etc. You are in good hands.

It your responsibility to fit into the grp as a new member. We do not and will not accept trouble makers into the grp. PERIOD! We are down to earth people, who want to have fun training our abilities to defend ourselves and our families. See the link here for the club website. If you don’t read Danish we will translate.

I hope ya’ll are doing well. As the title explains, this will be a mixed subject blog post. I’ve been on my back with a bug the last few days. I’m just glad that we went ancestral with our nutrition / life style. The flu would have had me down much longer before the switch.

To start with there is a video at the end of the post, that I listened to while drinking coffee and waking up. It’s worth a listen.

Well just stick with the pro subject for this next section. I used to post many more pro related blog posts when I had the company. There were subjects like lights, emergency knives and so on. In short tools of the trade.

I was given a LAIX B2 tac. pen as a gift. Thanks to the person by the way. I like it a lot. If you are hard on a pen then you might like to have one of these. It has always been my opinion that pro’s like cops, security of all sorts and any other emergency responder should have glass breakers and strap cutters with them. The trick is to get everything combined so the person doesn’t have to carry a tool box! The B2 that I have is a plus in that it’s a pen, self-defense tool and glass breaker all in one. You can see an in depth review of it here. http://www.sector38.com/laix-b2-range-tactical-pen-review/ . Just think if Jason Borne had a tactical pen when he stabbed the dab guy with a pen. The FMA nerds will get that one.  😉

I was also given a legal knife for carry in Denmark on my birthday. As I have written before my son and I are out in nature together from time to time. Boy scout stuff and the like. The

LAIX B2 and Lansky world knifeknife I was given is a lanky world legal version. Here in Denmark, the blade has to be under a certain length, demand 2 hands to open and not lock in the open position. That’s enough to really mess with a Texan who grew up with a buck in the back pocket. Getting back to the knife, I can have it with me when we are going on a outing and live up to the law even though we are not at a camp site or what ever it might be. The cool thing about the knife is the blade width. The blade is not that great but it will do. I would recommend that you get your file, diamond rod and stone out to change the angle on the cutting edge. It has a butt end that could work as a glass breaker in a pinch.

When doing security work, I used to have a leatherman on my belt. It ( the lanky) is not a good multi tool but it is what is, a way to be some what prepared for what ever with out the cops taking your leatherman because the blade is 5 mm too long. Add to that, the hassle, fines and possible time for having a TOOL on you.

I feel safe knowing I have a metal pen with a glass breaker, so I could do just that or what ever it might have to be used for. The knife is there, if you want a knife and a normal pen. Please note that the normal pen might be more dangerous as a defense tool when the end breaks.

Do I think that pro’s should have a dedicated strap cutter for seat belts and car accidents at all times? The answer is YES and I think that the agency, be it fire, police, military or security, should supply it. There are better solutions for this purpose. Please note that there are always some small needs for a knife. For us poor citizens who want to be some what prepared. The combo could be a way to go. Alone or together, you are better off with the the tools on your person. I can’t even start to count the number of time that I used the leatherman in security situations, when I needed a tool of some type.

Finally, and far from least…. thanks men for a cool training session and meeting the other day. The meeting showed me once again that we have a well balanced group of friends who share the FMA bug. Our Club ( forening ) is in good hands.  I’ll be ready for the next training session now that the flu bug has released it’s grip on me.

eskrima free sparring latosa concepts escrimaI was training with J the other day and working on / refreshing some of my tools / abilities while he was working on some new tools. That’s going to be the starting point for this posts. Where it goes from there … who knows!

Before that, I like to ask you if you … if you have done anything for your general mobility, strength and conditioning? I’ll tell you what I did today after sleeping late. Had some coffee and coconut milk, kisses a purity lady then worked out. It was a pull day. That ment deadlifts, bend over row with a rotation, 2 core exercises, a calf exercise and lat pulls. Get off your butt tomorrow morning and do something. 

Getting back to what we worked on when we were training. Timing is a strange thing if you don’t understand the doors it open for you. When you do, it’s just fun. To refresh, the basic timing variations are: preempting, same time variations, and late timing. When we start to mix the timing variations in an attack sequence we get things like half beat attacks. These can be  joint locks, takedowns, strikes, stabs , cuts and more. I did a leg sweep and took J’s second stick from him at one time. Of course, I had one stick at the time.

Any Hoo! At some point in time, I felt the urge to start using my second stick to stab with ( espada y daga style. ) J’s first response was to say … what was that? Jokingly I told him is was an old man cheating! On a serious note, J noticed that it was harder to see, ergo he was caught off guard by it ever time. That’s very true! Stabs are harder to read when we look at the ability to read attacks (baring the ability to read the attackers body movement.) Just the fact that the tip of the weapon may be all you see is enough to scare people. Add to that the fact that a stab with a knife goes deep without much force and you get a new respect. This is one reason that GM Rene Latosa talks a lot about zones and students of his, like myself preach about zones of attack from every mountain we find. It was the same, when I was with Master Lind at WCS. Regardless of what we doing the most effective way to protect your self is to look at attack zones. This could be with the array of FMA weapons / tools, it could be true of the general British type of sword training (sword and buckler is great fun!), and it could be true of the German type sword training.

Back to the order of learning. When we start with the figure-8 system of basic blunt weapon strikes, we learn about reading what the attacker / assailant is attacking us with. With time we learn to read the attacker and move from same time strikes to preemptive strike. Once that ability is bettered to a suitable point, we can start learning to read the stabs. This means we start to understand that stab can stop and start in the same little bitty segment of space and still be just as dangerous.  It’s all about taking baby steps before we walk then run.

You might be thinking that the old man has forgotten about the half beat! He’s gotta be getting old. Nope, I’m not that far gone yet! As we progress from same time strikes, we learn to step on the gas with an extra strike between the beat. Stabs or #5 strikes are an easy way to do that.  With time, we can learn to act and react on one third beats, one quarter beats and so on. It’s all about the flow drills and the speed that are performed to build this ability. This gets back to my last post about flow and so on. Flow is a tool, to learn about and better, your half beat strikes and more.

All this gets into energy and short power and everything starts to interlock, intersect and become universal when we look at FMA and GM Latosa teachings. I’ll let you think about that one for a while. Can you say nexus? We’ll call it the LC Nexus just for kicks! Remember learning to do is becoming aware of what you have learned to do! In this case, learning to use the #5 is learning to be aware of that same attack if an attacker uses it on you.

That’s it, the red meat and green stuff I ate after training is almost gone. It’s time for some more food!

Some physical training hints for Latosa Concepts, FMA


Good morning, I hope you having a great weekend. The blog post today is a video with some ideas for training speed and explosion as well as general conditioning. It has Gesias “JZ” Calvalcante in some training situations. You will see where inspiration can be gotten. You’ll see parts of the video where you could simply put a stick in your/his hand and there would be no difference in MMA and LC Escrima training. Any Hoo! Ya’ll enjoy.
