Welcome back to Latosa Concepts, FMA blog.

I hope ya’ll are doing well. I was training with a member of our group the other day and some questions came up after he had taken a break from training with us. (he was some where else in the world)

We will answers some of his questions and hopefully remind others of the way we train. 

We’ll start with a look at the human body. The wrist is a weaker joint in relation to other joints on the arm. The shoulder is the clear winner for us regarding strength. This explains why blocks are weaker than attacks. Energy generated by the fig.-8 system gives support/and strength to the wrist. There is a mind set when training the fig.-8 system which is much more attacking in it’s nature as well. This supplies energy (aka strength) 

Now let’s look at the first three grades from what I teach. 1st. grade: fig-8 with focus on a drop, balance, ability to use a pushing back leg, a body rotation, and other aspects of power generation. 2nd grade: we start looking at higher attacks and continue with the fig-8 system. 3rd grade: We look at the box. In each grade there is palm stick and other weapons/ tool uses that work with the grade requirement. I don’t teach Wing Tsun unarmed then turn around and teach LC Concepts for sticks etc. Sorry WT people, Escrima is more than enough for me and well suited for many many uses. Especially when you see the transition from weapons sinawali’s in/to unarmed training. I don’t have to play mind games, I do one system! 

A video is posted below with and example of a cross strike to a low target with a basic box (box system) movement to a high target afterwards. 

The order could have been reversed if I chose to do it that day. The idea is to understand the power generation possibilities by using a classic fig-8 strike and then doing a suppressed Latosa box system movement. In short I am saying to the students that they need to learn to analyse what they are doing so they can use both.

In other words, I am teaching them to be warriors who can do what has to be done in a given situation (because it fits better and/or the simple fact that they can do it)! 

There is a difference in teaching soldiers and warriors. If this makes me a snob, so be it.  

Some training sessions are based on grade requirements and some are based on a theme that we are focusing on at the time. The ability to ping pong between classic box and classic fig-8 is the theme of the drills in the video below. At the moment we are looking at different ways to use the number 5 attack as a tool to use in different situations. 

Ya’ll should thank Dom for this explanation. He asked some question the other day. Now for the hard words that could open a can of worms. Many instructors don’t  demand what I demand of the students or maybe they have not put the time/thought into the order of subjects they teach. That’s an issue they will have to work out. For my guys, remember you are being taught in ways others are not taught. Many 1st graders (other systems) will not have a palm stick, a knife, do anti-grappling and more. Many 2nd grader in other systems will not train 2 stick open-8 and kop kop. It’s your job as student to remember what we are working on when I say (for example) it’s all about the ability to use a fig-8 strike, then a box attack, then a hard knock down with a pass, and finally a #5 attack. You are being taught to be free thinkers with many tools. 

I was lucky to be taught by a collection of very good instructors with GM Rene as the guiding light. You are being taught to be warriors, not soldiers who get a crash course in the box or some other aspect of what we do. 

You need to learn to see the weaknesses in the differing systems and the strengths in them as well. Example: a rolling shoulder, which is the trigger/power source for a short power attack, is a telegraphing signal (aka your head ache when you get hit) if used in a long distance attack.

Enough of that folks. We are still not taking new people in. I have recently said sorry to a few people because of that. On top of that, I am focused on making the people in our group, or people who want to come back, the best that we can make them. If that makes me a grumpy old man, so be it.

  • No training Monday the 5 of June… holiday.
  • Instructor free training during weeks 29,30,31
  • We have started the strike pad training now that it’s warmer. Have your water, gloves and possibly an extra t-shirt with you.

The responsibility of power, Latosa Concepts FMA terminology.


I hope ya’ll are doing well. It’s time for another post, which I hope, will give you food for thought. Before I get started there are a few things that need “saying.”

  1. GM Rene Latosa is making the rounds. Make sure you get to one of his seminars if you can.
  2. Congratulations to D.K. and A.N. on the new grades. Well done. Both men were given there grades a while back, but it’s worth saying again.
  3. Remember members and former students  need to let us know if you are coming to the Before Christmas Christmas Party for the club.

Enough of that. Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. What is power, or for that sake responsibility ? Power can be uncomfortable for many people. I would venture to say/write that power is something that scares many power in many cases. The power and responsibility for our children can be the catalyst for profound change in us. For many of us it’s a scary thing in the beginning. Some people never really are relaxed with it. For some people power is the ability to live ones life without fear.

We have all seen people who don’t want to make a decision. They are just scared of the responsibility of power. Other in turn relish having the power and end up being real pains in bottom for others. In many ways, you can see the different types of people in the election process at the moment. Many younger people would like to just give all the power to the government in the hope that system and the people running it, are good people. Others think that the government should be smaller and less powerfull.

We see the same thing in the gun issue. Many people are not afraid to protect their individual power by way of concealed carry and others can’t stand the idea of the person next to them carrying a concealed weapon. Colin Noir touches on this subject in his introduction to the video below.

I have been lucky enough to help people several times in my life. The power, I have is not a firearm on my hip ( that would mean jail and expulsion from Denmark). The power I have is the my training. I have had many very good instructors who I have learned from. Add to that some life experiences, and I was able to help people at times in my life as well as avoiding violent conflicts, when others could see it would be a hard fight to get what they wanted from me and my family ( ill gotten gains).

That ability / power came from embracing the fact that part of power and responsibility for those in my care means doing what has to be done. In short taking on the responsibility as mine. Training combative sports, martial arts and other defensive system may not be scary for some people. Others feel very frightened by just walking past out little group training with wooden knives. (BTW, we worked on some knife scenario training at Saturday’s training yesterday.) I can tell you from experience that the guy, that an American and a Russian protected from three men with bottles is not upset about the training those two individuals had, or the fact that they were willing to help him. All of the others looking on did not feel like they could help. They were powerless! I was told this by many people who heard what I ( The American ) did. Should we go through life with a feeling of no power? You should ask yourself that. My family always had firearms when I was kid. We were raised with what could happen when one was handled incorrectly. In short I was raised to respect power and understand that I had it as well as my father. My families safety was my responsibility when my father was not home.

We all have to develop power and the responsibility of power. If we don’t, we will never be whole. How can we be good parents unless we have the power to say “no” when our children need to hear that word. Feeling incapable to parent our children means our children will not grow to be responsible, powerfull and truly happy people.

The colleges in the states have become political correct hot beds of late. Part of understanding the power we have is seeing all aspects of it. By not saying or thinking something we are cheating ourselves of the responsibility of power. In shorts we are sheep. Sheep have no power. They enjoy the protection of the sheep dog when needed but are scared by it’s presence when there are no wolves around.

We can’t be powerful, aka responsible when we refuse to do what needs tone done (a self-defense situation) or say what needs to be said ( example of parenting) if we done except the responsibility! I get the fact, that not everybody needs a combative / self-defense instructor like myself. Some people might want a bjj or some other type of instructor. What needs to be understood is not taking on the responsibility for your own and your families safety gives the power to someone else.  You can’t say anything bad about what was done to you if yo have always given your power away to other people.

Btw., if we lived in Texas, my whole family would have firearms training. We are in Denmark, so my firearm has to be my knowledge of FMA and self-defense. The Danish and the American idea of responsibility for ones family are quite different. In one case the  government has all the power ergo has to protect the people as well as it can. In the other case people feel the responsibility for their families protection.  For the Danes this could relate to “bestandshjælp”/ welfare  contra  “A-kassen” / unemployment insurance.

Embracing our power and responsibility can be seen in many ways. I know I have embraced the responsibility for my family’s health and well being instead of going along with the budget based treatments that we might experience in the health care system here in DK.

Escrima and self-defense is just one facit of embracing responsibility and power.

I hope are doing well. I thought it was time to have some videos regarding the craftsman’s side of what we are interested in. The fact, that I work with my hands, as well as make many of the Escrima / Kali trainers that I / we use, simple makes videos like the one bellow a must. As those people who can really create with their hands, will tell you, it can be a meditative experience. That meditative experience is mentioned in video and it helps to heal and bring balance. That alone makes the videos a must here on this blog. Balance is after all one of the main concepts GM Rene Latosa teaches.

screen-shot-2016-09-10-at-18-35-48The second point for today is our little get-to-gether  aka the “Melon Bash.” Men are just big boys and that means we have to play to stay happy. Any self respecting person will tell you the same. We got together and swung rattan sticks, stainless trainers and much more at the likes of oranges, apples,pineapples, and of course the notorious ZOMBIE MELONS! we managed to make quite a big pile of fruit salad around the cutting pole.

Apart from just watching things explode, many lessons were learned. Balance became imperative, hitting the target helped quite a bit, controlling distance was improved, and most af all… seeing what happens to things when they are hit, crushed and cut. Just as developing balance helps us to have power, it helps us to control the attackers power…the same lesson is learned when watching what happens to the notorious zombie melons. The number one rule of the game is not to be hit, stabbed or cut, if at all possible. Seeing what happens to the fruit with such little force should make every person more aware of what we are training ourselves to protect ourselves against.

For the members who didn’t show up because they were sleeping in after a night drinking, or just being lazy, you missed out. Once again, many thanks for the hospitality A.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundWe are back at it folks! Training with the old fart, aka the trainer, will be up and running on Monday, Aug 8-2016. 16:45. As club members know we follow a general theme for periods of time. The first theme will be strike pad training. Yes, you will need your water bottle with you.:)

I’ll post a video or two below to show possible strike pad training during the upcoming month. It may sound harsh to start with strike pad training out of the gates, but life is not always easy.  I’ve have been staying at summer vacation sites here in DK for the last 3 wks. I started the days with conditioning for LC Escrima and general martial arts/combative training. I hope all the members have been doing the same. 😉

Remember to have dark colored shorts / training pants and club t-shirts. As always dansk FMA og selvforsvars grupperemember to send a text, if you can’t make it to training or you are going to be late. We would rather see members come to training for the last hr. If you can’t make it from the very beginning of class start. Some people have already told me they will be starting up mid-month because of work etc. Get some basic training in so you don’t start up cold guys. 🙂 An example could be heavy bag training with strength training stations after. See the last post here on the blog.  It’s a good example.

Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation strength and conditioning

I hope ya’ll are doing well. it’s time for some more inspiration for your strength and conditioning during the summer vacation or just any other day.

My family rents a summer house every summer. We just returned home after some time away. With my day job being as physically tough on my 51 yr old body, my vacation was a time for me to focus on my self every morning. This is a description of what I did after my coffee. I hope it inspires you to get off the sofa ! I did a type of station training, repeating the stations.

  1. Coffee and sitting in the yard watching the sun come up!Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 1
  2. Get the rope out and find a good tree to hang from
  3. Grab your Escrima tools, (Mine were: 2 sticks, 3 knives, and a hatchet that I made a ergonomic handle for)
  4. Start doing right handed and left handed fig-8, high-high-low, and many other patterns.
  5. Do a few sit-ups, push ups, back ext., squats and more to warm up.
  6. Now you can do free forming  or just strike pattern training with your weapon combo. Change every time you come back to it,
  7. Do one type of frontal sit-ups, then side/lateral core muscle training, then back extension Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 3of your desire.
  8. Do 2 types of push-ups every time you you start them.
  9. Do some lung training. Jumping from side to side. (see pictures)
  10. Do some pull and back shoulder training. (see picture)
  11. Repeat, repeat, repeat,repeat, repeat, repeat, and repeat all stations!
  12. Do some stretching
  13. Eat some breakfast, read a book or just hang out.Latosa Concepts, FMA summer vacation conditioning 2
  14. The rest of the day should be used on your family.

Note!, the core training changed every time I did it, if you are looking for ideas, there are gobs of ideas on YouTube. The same for the push ups. There are many forms. Because you are doing this program every day, you should leave a little gas in the tank when doing the exercises. An example would be making sure you can do one or two more push-up etc. Then you stop and move on to the next exercise.

Latosa Concepts logo red backgroundI have done the same at the fitness center. The sticks were replaced with heavy bag work. Some exercises were, walking lunges, step ups, asymmetric squats, wrestlers press, pull ups and more. Today, I did bag work, deadlifts and twisting bend over rows and then core training. Tomorrow I will do pushing/squatting/lunge exercises with more core training and bag work.

Escrima træning i københavn med Dansk fma 4I hope ya’ll are doing well. I thought it was time to touch base with a few idea’s for the new members and a reminder for the other members.

Before I go too far, a tip og the hat to MA in Jutland. His group is doing well and growing. I am also working on some more sticks this bunch should be heavier.

The new men are experiencing the fact that we are a hitting system when we lookout the first few grades. The 1st grade is all about balance and learning to control our bodies. The men hear a lot about the pushing back leg, dropping power, the power leg and high starting positions.

As part of the striking theme, we are following right now, there is pad work, tire work and hitting sit-ups. Hitting sit-ups help with pulling the stick / hands back too far. They are one of the many drills we learned from GM Rene Latosa. They also help to coordinate the strikes with one of the power mechanisms that we use … the stomach and lats.

The men are also doing a hitting warm up on the tires to help work on the timing of the feet and the contact point (we are talking about time here!) many people will step in too far to use the strike or weapon they intended simply because they can’t control the happy feet. 😉

Foot work is great but unneeded footwork and /or at the wrong time will give you a head ache and/or take the power and balance out of your strike. The same goes for unneeded offline movement when we have the upper hand. AKA we are a head because of position and other factors.

pr 24 vs knifeI’m looking forward to seeing the new men go through the development that the rest of the group has gone through.  I don’t want to get into to much of it, but we can use an idea and the new men can think about it. Lets say the foot moves at a given speed (X) and the arm moves at another (Y) speed.  Now lets say the student steps a given distance when striking  (Z). If the math nerds haven’t figured it out yet we can can adjust one factor ( x, y, or z) and affect the strike.  Making people aware of this relationship is an ongoing learning curve. The new men are starting with it during the preparation for the 1st grade test. It’s down right amazing what we can do when we adjust these three factors or add some more factors to the equation.

Niklas is working on controlling these same factors, just with two sticks now. To a certain degree he is repeating the second grade just with 2 sticks.

And for the beginners, Some governing ideas / concepts we use are these gifts of awareness from GM Latosa.

  • Balance
  • Speed timing and distance
  • Focus
  • Power
  • Transition

They all are factors we use and more.You will continue to hear about them during the classes.

For non members, we train on Mondays and Wednesdays at 16:45- 18:15 at Grøndals Multicenter in Copenhagen. When we have some better weather we can start talking about beach training, wk-end training and more again. Make sure you email so we can plan a trial session for you. That’s on Monday from now on! Having people pop in almost every day is keeping me from the actual members.

Training with intent. What does this mean for Latosa Concepts, FMA? FMA terminology!

I hope ya’ll are doing well.

To start with we’ll have a quick update for the Danish FMA and Self-Defense Group in Copenhagen. Training during the last 2 weeks of July have been without training instruction from myself. The men have been making their own plans for training during these two weeks.

For anybody who has has kept an eye on the FB page for the Danish FMA and Self-Defense Group, they will have seen my remarks about intent! What do we mean when we use this term?

Let’s get back to basics and the concepts that GM Rene Latosa teaches. There is balance, focus, power speed-distance-timing, and there is transition. Intent is when we hit with the desire to strike or counter strike with the idea of damaging. In short we mean it! If we look at my past and point karate tournaments, we can say that there was a time when I did not train with intent! The distance was wrong because we tried to be as far away from our opponent when punching. We also used a lot of energy on the draw back phase of the punch. If we train our selves to punch ( a given example ) out of range to have a real effect and we know what we are doing then there is no intent.

We can look at the number of training partners we have, and quickly come to the conclusion that we would run out of partners, if we follow through with strikes to the head (a given example ). We want to keep our training partners around because they are friends and are also needed to continuing getting better at what we do. How do we train intent then? The answer is we intend to hit the person, when we start the attack! Then we stop the power at a given range using power mechanisms ( a term I coined to better explain how we generate and control power.) The use of dropping power helps to improve balance and the ability to keep the energy moving. Helmet training or training with padded sticks is a way to not stop the power short of the head, arm, or what ever target or zone we attack.

eskrima free sparring latosa concepts escrimaWe have talked about the trinity of speed , timing and distance. We can look at them when examining our intent. If we choose a target or zone that is a long distance combo of the trinity, then we will have a given possible combination of speed timing and distance, ( this is simplified for this explanation / blog.) Another distance will have another combination. What’s important is that we have intent when performing the attacks / counter strikes.

You might say… what about focus? That’s easy. Are we putting power towards a placement besides the real target? Many people do this. They look great but if we look closely, we’ll see that the strikes is aimed at a spot next to the head ( a given target ). Some of the men have a hard time getting rid of this “nice guy gene.” What we have to remember is that we are training our partner, when we train our selves to aim at the target. Striking towards a spot besides the head again and again trains that pattern into our nervous system and it teaches our partner that there is no real danger! Even worse, if we are striking at a spot in front of the head and our training partner really doesn’t have to do anything. We have to remember that we are training our selves to function under stress and when that stress is not there, it’s all a joke. Someone throwing a strike at us that is in distance, focused, done with balance and power, and the ability to transition to another attack target helps to create that stress and get us ready.

All this might seem like a physical act for the uninitiated. What we are really talking about is a state of mind! We should not be afraid to let a strike go, that is set in motion with the idea of bashing a target in. The fact that we stop ourselves at the last moment should not change this fact. Many people have a hard time with that dark side of themselves. The truth of the matter is we train ourselves to do one thing or another. Are we teaching our selves to hit the air or break an arm when attacked? If you are training to defend yourself against the air, by all means keep thinking about hitting the air in front of your training partner.

I know what I train for:

  • 1. Defense of my family.
  • 2. Defense of myself.
  • 3. The mental and physical aspects of training.
  • 4. Spending time with friends, training partners and student.
  • 5. Giving back and continuing the transference of the knowledge that I was given by my instructors and mentors so my students can protect themselves and their families.

 

I could ramble on for along time about intent and the concepts GM Latosa teaches with his style of FMA, but it’s still my vacation. I hope your summer has been a great one.
